PFMSA 2020

Founded – August 2018

A Team made from what was once just a WhatsApp group of individuals who were on search and the rescue of first Brett, and then gathered and spread the word and search to KZN, South Africa, to help find Miguel.
This group knew little at the time that their Blessings and duties on Earth were indeed to assist in search and rescue of our loved ones, so with commitment and dedication, today, since August 2018, proud still to exist, this NPO has grown up to a membership of over 200 as seen on their identified Facebook group.
We wish to extend our love and appreciation to all who have partaken in the SHARING and posting of our banners. It has even reached to multitudes of South African members overseas who have thanked us for the work we do… It’s not as easy as it may sound.
Please share our latest with members in and surrounding the Johannesburg region.

Sadly, as we would love to report that all was found safely, there are instances such as our little “Amanda” (name disclosed) that we have been in search for the past 2 years. I actually do remember her, as we had just started out and getting to our feet when her file came in. She’s been on our website page too, as traces or witnesses was an echo call that just kept hitting back. For one to go to the family of a 3 year old Angel is one of the worst duties that an individual involved in a search team must do. Our member, “Mike” literally doesn’t remember the last time rest was available to him. One must prepare on HOW to approach these parents whom, for quite some time, had lived with hope that thier little “Amanda” would be found and returned home safely. Unfortunately, with the assistance our new technology identification system and processing, the DNA of a little girl’s body matched with that of “Amanda”.

In Love and Respect to Raylene Louw, Queen Mother to little Miguel Louw: I think about Rayray today, in pain, as I google outside my own crying window... As a Mother and guide, she now has entered the sad realm of my very own shadow... I open my eyes taking the deepest breathe into my soul, to stay in control from a seizure… I breathe out again, closing my eyes slowly, as my head shakes side to side… No, YOU DON’T understand this torture What it means, is that just as me, soon she will witness what she is not EVER supposed to see As Mother’s we strongly believe, ‘’my child will NEVER leave before me’’… Oh God, Oh God, Give her the strength she needs Our Father! Lord, father of ALL! ‘’What DO I do now as his MOTHER!!!!’?’ As your Queen, I was brave enough to keep trying, and thankful enough to see the grace in it all through you my child… and now, as I stare… This occurrence has just destroyed that, surely I cannot make no effort to even attempt to repair ? For now I feel shredded, diminished and dusted, OH!!!!!! my life has majorly been readjusted! As the people are surely around you, my friend, Raylene, yes indeed they are there: but for this? This is no cure… In agony, Mummy Rayray still self confidently awaits her loving Son, and so continuously… keeps staring at her door… Her head tilted to the side?… a sign of hope that this is not true A silent stuttered sentence she utters without speaking, ‘’NO my Son, it cannot be you’’ The frown on your forehead as you start to cry again, expresses the words you cannot speak The tight grips of your hand as you take it to your face screams ‘’Dear Lord did this happen to me?!!!’’ We hope and pray that it can be over today, Oh LORD! We pray that it can just be over today, silently we sit in a world of our own catacomb, for Son to JUST come home, our child, now you can truly come back home…? I cry with internal bleeding, They see me silent, yet ontop of my voice I am yearningly screaming!!!! How can I ever be happy again? The mist is permanent… lost forever in pain that’s paralyzing, and agonizing! I just want to hold you and tell you it’s going to be okay and everything is the same, even though inside we both know… it never ever will…again… I love you my friend and I am right here…. With you… when you need me… Much Love… Your Gal…Tanya Williams, Mom of Milano Craig Leevale Williams. Durban.

The DHC continues to serve the poor during lockdown

As we move into Week 6 of the lockdown in South Africa, the DHC continues to serve the poor of central Durban in a range of ways.

Principally, our building continues as the host for up to 100 elderly, disabled and sick homeless men. The good news is that men who arrived very ill with TB (in some cases close to death) are now stabilised on their medication, have put on weight and are getting stronger and stronger. Thanks to the work of Sr Cathy, our social worker, a few of our residents have been able to re-unite with their families which is wonderful news.

Stuart Talbot, who shares with her the role of site manager, has drawn some of the men into his passion for sketching. The photo above shows some of them creating a drawing or collage of how they imagine their lives to be after lockdown. Examples are on our Facebook page.

Our clinic team – who were really stretched to the limits in the early weeks visiting all the emergency shelters – are now delivering a more sustainable service. They look after the men in our building; they are providing the usual drop-in clinic for refugees (now that more people are moving around the CBD); and the mobile clinic is visiting key locations such as Dalton to provide healthcare and a daily-observed treatment programme for patients with HIV and TB.

Bongani Madida continues as site manager of the Jewish Club shelter – applauded by the Mayor recently as one of the best run across the city! And we continue to work with the network of NGOs, Municipal officials and corporates around the city to plan for what happens next.

Hope Vouchers to feed those in need

A coalition of concerned KZN churches have flagged emergency relief as their most immediate focus and are rolling out ‘Hope Vouchers’ to vulnerable families in 11 districts and eThekwini Muncipality over the next three months. Click here to see the Cardinal and others talking about this on SABC TV last night.

The Food Relief programme is being driven by five Christian NGOs: City Hope, Domino Foundation, Nation Changers, SA Red Cross and Zoe Life as a part of the broader project convened by the KZN Christian Council.

Initially their food relief consisted of hampers of basic food staples and hygiene products. Since 25 March over 600,000 meals have been packed and distributed across KZN. However, there is now shifting to use food coupons, ‘Hope Vouchers’, which can be redeemed at retail partners, Boxer, Checkers, Pick ‘n Pay and uSave.

These vouchers are made possible through innovative, cutting-edge technology powered by Intellimali, an SMS voucher service provider (see picture above). It ensures that the relief gets directly into the hands of the family who needs it – all they need is an ordinary phone.

Church leaders invite businesses, organisations and individuals to contribute generously.

Further details are on the websites of KZNCC and Domino Foundation.

Click on the Covid-19 relief button on the Domino Foundation website to give using a credit card or click here to use Zapper.

Jazz Fundraiser for the DHC

A fabulous online concert to be held on Weds 27 May, in aid of the DHC, will feature over 20 pianists from South Africa, UK, USA and the Netherlands.

The COVID-19 virus became all too real for UKZN’s Piano Passion Project recently, when Prof Darius Brubeck was afflicted with the virus. He found himself on a ventilator, in intensive care, with doctors giving him a 50/50 chance of survival. Given Darius’ miraculous recovery, and the obvious financial need in our communities, the Piano Passions Project decided a fund-raising thanksgiving concert was in order.

Thanks to social distancing, this will be an online concert – but that means, unlike previous fundraising concerts, our supporters from round the world can join us! The concert will be two hours of piano performances created especially for the event, featuring the wealth of talent that is part of Darius’ legacy here in KZN. A full list of the pianists can be found on the PPP Facebook page. One of them will definitely be our old friend Melvin Peters seen here (some years ago!) with Darius.

Tickets are R80 each (less than $5!) and available on www.webtickets.co.za (with the option for patrons to donate more).

This event forms part of the weekly online concerts of UKZN’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music so you could actually buy a pass that covers all the concerts for this month!

The real stories behind the stats

The big numbers – 1,700 homeless people in emergency shleters in Durban – can disguise the individual stories that lie behind these.

We were thus delighted that local photo-journalist Samora Chapman recently worked with us to get to know the lives of some of the homeless men in lockdown at the DHC and at the Jewish Club shelter.

This has resulted in a stunning photo-essay for the Daily Maverick which gives an insight into the lives of these ‘Street Dreamers’. You can read the article here and see just a few of his stunning photos.

These and more of the pictures he took will soon be avaialabe for sale (in black & white and colour) as limited edition, high quality signed prints.

Samora will be joining another Durban artist in raising funds for the DHC. His photographs will complement the beautiful ink drawings of Nikhil Tricam who lovingly creates detailed and easily recognisable drawings of some of the city’s landmarks.

The curatorial vision is the dialogue between buildings and people; ink and photo, the city before COVID and the city during COVID.

The pieces will be presented in different ways and sizes: framed and unframed. The on-line sale of art pieces will benefit the DHC, the artists and the models. Works will be on sale from 20 May and can be viewed on our Facebook page from next week.

More great books to buy on line

One thing we alll have right now, is time to read books!!

And because there has been much spring cleaning going on during lockdown, lots of new books are being donated to us. (Though if you do have books, hold on to them for now since we have NO space left in the store generously donated to us by St John Ambulance).

Our Street Lit vendors, supported by the Booksellers of Mzanzi, have an amazing selection of affordable books available. During Lockdown they are selling mostly online. Anivesh Singh from Micromega Publications has made a selection of books available on his site: www.madeinchatsworth.co.za.

The vendors (such as Vusi Meyiwa and Richard Nzima in the photo) have been choosing books from their personal collections and from the storeroom to upload: novels, recipes, historical, reference, politics, faith, travel, humour, educational, self-help, art, children’s books, local interest and even some collectables.

We would love you to support the vendors by buying their books – they can be purchased now and picked up / dropped off when viable to do so.

As we progress through levels of lockdown we are also hopeful to have vendors back at shopping malls to sell there and are busy talking to partners to make this possible.

The vendors would also like to thank Matt Vend for his recent online EP launch of Lost inside the Static, and fundraiser for them. More details here about the album and how to purchase it.
